Decorating 101: Country Style Kitchen
Everyone has their own preferences when it comes to décor, but most find the cozy, welcoming atmosphere of a country-style kitchen very appealing. The kitchen area is often considered to be the heart of the home. This is a wonderful place for the family to congregate to enjoy good food and good conversation. Here are some ideas and tips on how to incorporate an old-time country look and charm into your kitchen.
Country Style Brings the Farm to Mind
In a country-style kitchen, you often see a great deal of early American character displayed. A country décor can make you think of a farmhouse, and it’s actually typical to see roosters, cows, hens, pigs, and other farm animals on display. Often, the theme will focus on a particular animal. Some people prefer, though, to use a combination of animals and display them in various places all around the room.
Central to the Theme Is the Kitchen Table
Usually, country-themed kitchens are one big room. If there’s no separate dining area, the table may actually be in the kitchen itself. Thus, it’s essential that your kitchen table and chairs are designed in the country style. The high-backed wooden chairs can have cushioned or decorated seats. Or for even more old-time charm, find a solid wood table that still has knots visible from the original tree. Add a hutch or buffet to complete the room’s furnishings.
Antique Touches Add Charm
Many country-style kitchen accessories can be found at flea markets and garage sales. You can remind everyone who enters of years gone by at grandma’s house with an old butter churn or iron skillet. Different-sized old cast iron skillets can be hung together on a wall, while an old butter mold is displayed on the countertop. If the accent or trivet looks as though it came from a long time ago, it will work perfectly in this type of décor.
Carry Through with a Theme
If you pick a central theme for the room, be sure to carry it throughout. For instance, if you settle on roosters, then be sure to use them everywhere. You should easily be able to find cookie jars, canisters, hot pads, dish towels, clocks, and more that are designed in a rooster pattern.
Coordinate Your Windows
Curtains that coordinate with the colors in the room should be used for the windows. In a country decorating theme, common colors include golden yellow, blue, dark green, brown, and rustic hues such as dark red or rust. Go with a solid color or choose a pattern that complements the rest of the décor. Another option is wood shutters, which go perfectly with this type of decorating style.
Choose Lighting with Charm
When you’re looking for lighting, keep in mind that nothing adds more charm than a wrought-iron chandelier. Unlike other chandeliers, this look is neither too elegant nor too dressy and thus perfect for country decorating. When hung over the table, this will keep the atmosphere cozy and comfortable.
You can complete your charming country kitchen by placing a basket filled with fresh fruit or pine cones and other natural foliage in the center of the table. A country style can bring not only charm and beauty but the warm of family gatherings into your home.
